My temporary addiction gave me a big headache
Mar 9, 2008 Personal
So the last few days I’ve been a bit awol. I’d like to say I was away doing something productive, but I’d be lying. Nope, I was playing Halo. A LOT of halo. On Thursday of this past week, Bungie added a game called Grifball to their online matchmaking in Halo 3, which sadly will be gone after today. What I’ve discovered is that the game is just a wee bit addictive. Obviously if you’ve never played Halo 3 or the game of Grifball, you’re probably a little lost at this point. I’ll attempt to explain it.
It’s really quite simple. The game is played with teams of at least three but no more than four, on a flat playing surface (or court if you will) which is divided down the middle. On each end of the court is a flat circular goal. In the middle of the court sits a ball shaped bomb. The players on each team are equipped with these giant hammer things and rather futuristic looking swords.
When each round of the game begins, players dart towards the middle of the court, converging on the ball. It’s sort of similar to a face-off in hockey. When everyone reaches the middle, the hammers start swinging. Whoever ends up with the ball must now make it to the opposite end of the court and score a goal, which sets off the bomb. The remaining three players on his team have the job of clearing a path to that goal, while the opposing four players must defend their goal. As you can imagine, the whole process is violent and oodles of fun.

I’ve been doing quite well. The only side effect I’ve had so far from playing Grifball is a huge headache. It’s probably my fault as I tend to like to play Halo with headphones on. For some reason it’s easier for me to hear the players on my team. Unfortunately that also means I can hear the banging of the hammers loud and clear. After a couple hours of playing, it feels like someone dribbled my head like a basketball. Of course I continue to play because it’s fun. A LOT of fun.

Oh, the weather outside is frightful
Mar 4, 2008 Personal
According to the Weather Channel and their website last night, the little area of upstate New York where I reside was going to be impacted by a “monster storm” today. As you can see from this photo below, the monster storm we’re experiencing looks rather tame, unless of course even the very sight of insignificant snow frightens you. Weather prediction is definitely not an exact science.
This photo was taken using my Canon HV20 with a Raynox wide angle HD lens. You can click on the image for a larger version.

If you’re going to send someone a DVD, make sure it works first.

A few years ago my cousin Jonathan scored a part in a local indie horror flick titled “Hush”, directed by some woman I’ve never heard of. According to my cousin the footage shot for the film was far less than stellar and the acting by most involved wasn’t much better. As you can imagine I’ve been dying to see this “masterpiece” since I first learned of it back then. I almost got my chance last night.
After THREE years the woman who directed the flick, which I should mention is a 25 minute short film, finally sent two copies of what I guess is supposed to be the final cut of the movie. They showed up at my uncle’s place (Jonathan’s father). We decided we’d make it at an evening of hanging out with Jonathan’s parents, munching pizza and wings and watching the film. Our friend Bruce and Jonathan’s wife also joined us. Bruce also hasn’t seen the film, so both he and I were looking forward to it.
So, let’s set the stage a little. Jonathan tore open the envelope sent by the director which revealed two unmarked, slim, black DVD cases. Classy. Inside each were Memorex brand blank DVDs with the word “Hush” scribbled on the face of each. I knew I must certainly be in for a treat after witnessing the time and love this director put into packaging her film. I could hardly wait.
Jonathan proceeded to insert the first disc into the DVD player - “Disc error”. Great. He then tries the second one - “Disc error”. Lovely! We both then say to each other, “I bet she burned it as a freakin’ divx file.” Sooo, Jon’s wife volunteers to head back to their place, grab their divx player and bring it back so we can properly watch the stinkin’ film.
Ten minutes later she returns.
Jonathan’s dad, who is pushing sixty and refused any help, managed to move the giant entertainment center by himself, just enough so he could get behind his LCD tv and hook up the divx player. I’m sure you can guess what happened next.
The disc still wouldn’t play.
At this point we decided to just say “screw it” and ended up watching The Big Lebowski which I think I can safely say is an infinitely better flick than the indie horror film. How can I say this even though I still haven’t seen the horror film? I just know.
By the way I brought one of the copies of the horror film home with me last night, thinking maybe I could figure out just what the heck format the file was in. It wasn’t. The disc was blank.

Soo, I bought yet another domain
Mar 1, 2008 Blogging
Realistically I need another website about as much as I need another hole in my head, but I discovered a pretty nice domain was available, so I grabbed it. Enter HaloVidz.com. I’m not that much of a gamer but I do enjoy playing Halo 3 online with my cousin. I’ve also played a few times with Bush. Here’s hoping we can hook up and play again sometime. He’s a good guy.
Anywho, mainly the purpose of the site is to gather some of the great Halo related videos I find while wandering around the internet and categorizing them. I’ll also post about news related to Halo, and the xbox360 in general. If the site actually picks up steam it might be fun to host some weekend Halo tournaments, but we’ll see how it goes.
Hopefully my interest in this site will remain a bit longer than the last site I put together. I swear I have ADD when it comes to blogging.
