A question of morals

rtp.pngI just finished watching a movie starring Vince Vaughn called Return to Paradise. I believe it was an independent film or at least one that got very little publicity, because I’d never even heard of it until Netflix recommended it to me. Though there were some scenes that were probably a bit melodramatic, it was overall a pretty decent film.

In a nutshell the film tells the story of three buddies who travel to Malaysia to party it up with booze and drugs, til they run out of money. While two eventually return home, one of them decides to stay behind. He’s a bit of an activist and has decided he wants to do some good for some endangered monkeys. However the drama unfolds when we’re fast forwarded two years only to find out that the friend who stayed behind was arrested on criminal possession of hash - 104 kilograms worth. Laws in Malaysia apparently state that if you possess anything more than 100 kilograms, you are a drug trafficker, the penalty for which is hanging.

Here’s where the questions of morals comes into play. A deal is struck which states that if the two friends who went back home to the U.S. return to Malaysia and serve three years each in prison, their friend will be set free and his life spared. The two friends now have a tough decision to make. Do they return and face their punishment, or do they let their friend die?

What would you do? If you found yourself in a similar situation and the fate of a friend rested in your hands, would you do what is necessary to save his life? What if you had a family? A great job. Perhaps a baby on the way. Would you cast that all aside for the life of your friend?

    My answer is simple: I wouldn’t possess hash. :)

    I would go back… even though I am pretty sure that Malaysian prisons are no walk on the beach. But I could not let my friend die. I could not then live with myself.

    I’d have to be honest and say I wouldn’t go back. I had nothing to do with whatever (I haven’t seen the film so I might be wrong on that) so why should I be punished as well?

    @Mark: LOL. Good answer.

    @Danielle: Very admirable of you :)

    @Jenny: Well in the movie they were all responsible for the drugs the guy was in possession of. He just got caught with them because he was the only one that didn’t go back home to the U.S….and thank you :)

    Amy, yes they went back. Only one of them stayed though. Unfortunately it still was not a happy ending :|
