The Canon HV20 - One puzzle piece in place for our low budget film
Posted By Mike on December 28th, 2007
As I’ve mentioned a few times, my cousin and I are in the writing process right now of what will be our first attempt at creating an independent film. After scouring the web, reading reviews and watching test footage of many different digital video cameras, we’ve finally settled on and have ordered the camera we plan to use - the Canon HV20. It’s by no means a top of the line pro camera, but after seeing the following test footage created by a guy named Solomon Chase, we were sold.

The most important thing for us is to have footage that looks as close to film quality as possible. We didn’t want something that was going to look like a lame home movie you’d create at a family reunion (for example), shot using a cheap camcorder. The footage from a Canon HV20 is anything but cheap looking. It’s quite amazing considering the camera sells for around $750. A few of the other cameras we were also considering had price tags that were three times as much and produced footage that really didn’t look that much better than the HV20. In the end we decided if we can get the video footage we want from something at a fraction of the price of those cameras, we’re going for it.
Once I get my hands on the thing and get it all figured out, I plan to do some test recordings and find out first hand just what the camera is capable of. I hope to share a few things here along the way. Before I can do that though, my next project is now to completely rebuild my computer with more powerful hardware in order to handle editing high definition video.
By the way, if you follow the link below the video, you can see the original high def version.

i’m so glad that everything’s coming together for your cousin and your independent film. have you decided on a plot? just curious. can’t wait to see it.
I’m by no means a camera expert but that is awesome quality
Keep up the good work!
@Jes: We have indeed
We’re about 41 pages into our screenplay so far. We hoped to have it finished up by the end of this month, but it looks like it’s going to take a bit longer.
@Maria: Looks great, doesn’t it?
Amazingly all he did with that footage was apply some color adjustments and of course add the fades. There were no other effects used. He didn’t even use a steadicam.
