Early reviews for The Happening not so good

My cousin sent me an early review he read of M. Night Shyamalan’s newest movie The Happening, and it’s not very pleasant to say the least. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I was really rooting for Shyamalan to return to form and remind audiences what an excellent storyteller he is. After a couple of lousy films (Lady in the Water, The Village), I still feel like he has the ability to pull off another fantastic film.

To quote the reviewer:

“The Happening” is a terrible, terrible movie. I mean, it’s bad on an epic scale. It’s so bad that I can’t possibly tell you how bad it is without understating the point or making it sound like I’m picking on the film. But let me stress: this is not pent-up Shyamalan aggression or a desire to see him fail. This is bad in a jaw-dropping “they can’t really be serious, can they?” kind of way.

If any of what this person wrote is even remotely true, that saddens me. Regardless though I still plan to see the film and judge for myself how bad (or hopefully good) it is. If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a red band version of the trailer. To me it looks like Shyamalan is pushing the envelope at least, and attempting things he’s not done before. Perhaps that is where the film fails.

This trailer is not one you’d see on TV, due to violent content, so if you’re squeamish, I suggest looking away during all the icky parts.

By the way if you’d like to read the rest of the review the quote from above is from, you can find it here.

Oh man, I hope it’s better than this review. I, too, am holding out for him to get back to his roots, like “I see dead people” kinda roots.

    Hope you’re doing well, buddy!

The wife and I saw it this weekend. It wasn’t that bad… but it wasn’t his best work by any means.

It was decent. There were several times where I was watching through my hands due to what someone was doing to themselves (like in the trailer you have). I think The Village was way better but since that’s my favorite, I am waiting for it to be topped.
