Entrecard - free targeted blog advertisements

entrecard.pngLike Mark, we’ve begun dabbling with Entrecard over on the BlogsWeLuv site thanks to this great post from John over on DNExpert. So far I like the system, however it could certainly use some improvements.

What the heck is it, you ask? Well in a nutshell Entrecard is a free blog marketing scheme that lets you place a single 125×125 pixel “card” on your site. Anyone signed up with Entrecard can use the “Drop yours” button to drop off their card on your site. If you approve their card, they’ll be granted what appears to be 24 hours of free advertising on your site.

What I like about the Entrecard system
It’s a super way to pick up potential web traffic. You simply search through the other blogs in the system and look for ones to drop off your card. Alternatively you can “buy” advertising on a site if you have enough credits. Credits are earned a few different ways.

1. You earn 1 credit every time you drop your card for someone else.
2. You earn 1 credit every time someone else drops their card for you.
3. You earn credits every time someone advertises on your widget.

I think this is also a neat way to test out the traffic potential of advertising on certain blogs. Say for example you’ve been thinking about contacting your favorite blog and inquiring about the possibility of running a square 125×125 ad monthly. With Entrecard you get a free trial, so to speak, to test the waters and see if it’s worth spending 75 bucks a month, or whatever the cost might be.

What I’d like to see changed or added to the Entrecard system
It would be nice if you could opt to have ads rotate instead of having the same one show for a 24 hour period. Perhaps the ability to choose up to four ads at a time to rotate.

Another thing that could use a little work is the admin dashboard, which is what you see when you log in to Entrecard. If you have a large number of bloggers dropping their cards off at your site, the dashboard can get pretty cluttered in a hurry, displaying all the pictures of the cards that were dropped off.

It would also be nice if the campaign page would display categories randomly. When you’re looking for blogs in the Entrecard system, the campaign page is where you go to. It seems right now the order of categories never changes. Perhaps if it were randomized, other less visited sites in the system would get a little more recognition.

Entrecard is still young and it does look promising. It’ll be interesting to keep track of stats over the following weeks to see how much extra traffic it really helps provide to a site.

    Thanks for the mention Mike!

    The thing that worries me about entrecard
    is the ability to reject advertising. You gather 50 credits and place an ad on a site, only to have it rejected by the owner.

    I suppose the whole system works around that premise, so not much they can do about it.

    So John, you are saying that you don’t get those credits back? If so, then ouch!

    @Mark: Yoooou’re welcome :)

    @John: No problem :) I haven’t tried the advertising part yet. I’ve just been dropping cards. So I guess I have the same question as Mark. You just lose those credits if they reject it? That would suck.

    I’m also seeing cards show up under the third “inbox” column but I never received e-mail about them. I can’t even approve or reject them. What’s with those? Mark’s site was in there for example.

    @Heavily Trafficked
    400 hits!? That’s not too shabby. I’ve gotten about 75 within a week I think so I guess I should start dropping more cars and making use of my credits. BTW, I approved your card on my blog. :)

    I’m really liking it so far :) I finally built up enough credits to advertise on JohnCow.com and now their spots are full. Grrr.
