Playing with the new camera – our first short film

Well it’s been just over three days now since my cousin Jonathan and I finally received our new high def camcorder. After charging the battery on Monday, we immediately jumped into creating some test footage which we liked enough to turn into a (very) short film. We both really enjoy horror and generally creepy visuals, so that’s what we aimed for with this. Jonathan is a whiz at creating fake blood, so he whipped a little up and we were all set to go. We ended up liking the results so much that we’ve decided to create a series based on this first little film. We’ve already recruited a couple friends to play the part of victims in upcoming episodes, so that should be fun!

Some notes about the film

  • The person you see in the film is Jonathan. Sorry ladies, he’s married.
  • Downstairs footage was filmed by me. Jonathan filmed the upstairs footage.
  • This is obviously not what the raw footage looks like. Editing was done by yours truly with plenty of input from Jonathan.
  • The music you hear was done by me several years ago. I lowered the pitch to make it sound a little more creepy.
  • You’ll notice a different last name in there for me. There are a TON of people on this planet with the exact same name as me, including an entertainer or two, so for film work I’m choosing to use an alternate last name. As an homage to my grandmother and the siblings she has lost this past year I’ll be using Lyon, her maiden name. Jonathan simply uses his middle name.
  • Sick Jack Films comes from the name of the first script my cousin and I wrote together. The script is now titled Evergreen but the original title was Sick Jack, so it’s sort of a sentimental thing for us.

If you’d like to see the high def version of the film, click on the link below the image. Fortunately the neighbors weren’t home upstairs or that would have been really awkward had they opened their door!

UPDATE: If you’re experiencing choppy playback on Vimeo, I’ve uploaded an alternate Quicktime version of the film. Please right click and save to download it.

Nice, I have added your video on the HV20 channel on vimeo.

BTW, nice to see that Solomon Chase’s video had one more successful sale. Canon should send him a check. :D

@Bucky: Thanks, Buddy! We’re doing some more filming tonight, however it may not be for another few days or so yet ;P

@Eugenia: LOL, I know. I was just saying to someone the other day that Canon should be giving the guy kickbacks for all the sales he’s probably generating for them. We teetered between getting the HV20 and a couple other cameras, but once we saw Solomon’s footage we were definitely sold :D

I don’t get it. Was he a door-to-door knife salesman? Was he going around offering to slice up some pizza. Maybe he was lost? Help me out here buddy! LOL

Thanks Bobby! I’d definitely recommend the HV20 when you do decide to pick up a camera. It’s very easy to use and produces some really outstanding footage. It certainly lacks some of the features of the more expensive pro cameras, but if you’re main concern is to have decent footage to work with, it’s a steal :)

if you don’t want your viewers thinking he’s about to kill his wife, then he probably should take off his ring. that was my first thought that whoever is behind the door is likely his wife and he’s going to catch them cheating or something but since he just killed someone else, then that line of thought is probably not accurate. either way, the ring is extraneous. but i loved it! especially the look on his face, and the music!

LOL…I already thought about that, Amy, after viewing it again a few times. It’s okay though because we’re actually going to be scrapping this and going with some new footage. This was a good start though to test out the camera :)
