I am only somewhat legend

Perhaps you might remember a while back I posted about the new Will Smith flick I Am Legend and how much I was looking forward to it. Well I finally saw it. To be honest I was pretty disappointed. Smith did a fine job acting. His performance as a scientist whose spent three years alone in post apocalyptic New York City teetering on the edge of sanity was convincing and impressive. The real problem with the film for me was the story and what wasn’t told. It felt very edited. There were a couple flashbacks here and there used to explain why New York City is in ruins and populated by only Will Smith and a bunch of virus infected, rabid vampire-ish creatures, but not enough.

I’m hoping the filmmakers and the movie studio responsible for I Am Legend will release an extended director’s cut to DVD. I have a feeling there was a whole lot of footage shot that you never get to see in the theatrical version that would have made it a much more rewarding film. If this infection of humans causing them to morph into nasty vampire-like creatures was caused by a biological weapon used in warfare, let’s see it happen.

I want to see the events that led up to where the story begins. The thought of billions of people on Earth being wiped out by a massive virus is really tragic. If the filmmakers would have included that tragedy rather than just alluding to it, I Am Legend could have been epic and gut wrenching, evoking real emotional response from me. Unfortunately in it’s shortened, heavily edited form, it did not.

Having said all of that though I’m not saying you shouldn’t see this film. It’s not horrible by any means. It’s actually pretty decent for the most part. However it’s what you don’t get to see that would have made I Am Legend unforgettable.

I really like the movie too. However did you feel that it ended too suddenly. It seems that they did a 1.5 hour buildup and wrapped it up in 10 minutes. Other than that I thought it was a good movie.

Hi Andy. I definitely felt that way as well. It felt very rushed at the end. With more of the story told and a longer ending I think it could be really exceptional. Here’s hoping that’s the case with a director’s cut version =)

(I saw your website on the comment on my review on BlogsWeLuv!)

I went and saw this last Friday when it came out and I was also disappointed. It was a great movie but there were some things missing and then end was very sudden.

I thought they could have made it better by not jumping straight to the town. (Sorry, spoiler!)

Ben, I agree the ending came quite suddenly. There’s a lot more that could have been told before it. There wasn’t even much of a climax to the ending which was also disappointing.
