The sorts of things which entertain me
Mar 15, 2008 Blogging, Link Love
Bobby (aka the classiest guy in the blogosphere) tagged me with this entertainment meme. My mission is to write about the things which, well, entertain me. Bobby wrote about books, TV, and Music. I’m going to substitute movies for books, since I’m not much of a reader. I can read however, I just don’t like to unless forced to do so at gunpoint. In case you’re wondering, that doesn’t happen very often.
Music, music, I hear music.
When it comes to music I’ll at least listen to just about anything once. If it’s catchy and has a decent melody, chances are I’ll listen to it again. Like anyone else though, I obviously have favorites and certain genres I listen to most.

Gee, I’m sure this is surprising since I know I don’t look like the type, but I love to listen to most forms of metal. I especially like bands whom are complex, at least a bit progressive and aggressive. Just a few of my favorite bands are Dream Theater, Dark Tranquillity, Meshuggah, Born of Osiris and Dimmu Borgir. I’d link to them all but I’m feeling lazy today.
I know one of the most common misconceptions about metal is that it’s all just noise played by talentless simpletons, but I can assure you after playing guitar for about twenty years, it’s some of the most difficult stuff to play. In fact a lot of metal bands draw inspiration from classical music, which certainly is not easy to play by any means.
Escaping for two hours.
That’s basically what movies are to me, an escape. With all the crap and frustrations a human has to deal with on a daily basis, it’s fortunate for us all that movies were invented. It’s nice to kick back and simply forget about everything even if it’s just for a little while, slipping into the imaginary worlds of our favorite movies.

I could write an entire post about all of my favorite films so I’ll just mention a few favorites. Superbad, Juno, Closer, If Only, Garden State, The Crow, Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands – these are just few of the many hundreds of movies I’ve seen and loved in my lifetime. Yes, I’m a huge Tim Burton fan.
The boob tube
I’m not really a big fan of watching television. In fact most of the time my TV sits on its stand turned off and collecting dust. However there are a few things which I do enjoy watching. Heroes and 24 are two series which I do not miss an episode of. Ever. 24 has been around now for six seasons and even though the last really sucked, I still never missed a single episode.

I’m also hooked on Ghost Hunters. I find anything to do with the paranormal fascinating, so watching these guys investigate supposedly haunted places is tons of fun. Though they always set out to disprove a haunting, sometimes they stumble onto things they just can’t explain which is what always keeps the show interesting.
So there you have it. That’s a just a few of things which entertain. Now I shall tag Mark, Tish, Aaron, Malin and Paula to find out what entertains them.

Cool stuff Mike. Bobby tagged me for this too, so since BOTH my favorite guys in the blogosphere want to know what scary stuff keeps me entertained, I’ll give it a whirl. (smile)

Thanks for the tag, buddy! It’s so cool that you like Heroes, too. I LOVE that show. Last Fall kind of stunk; even the creator admitted it. I wish we didn’t have to wait until next Fall for it to come back. But I wonder if the short series, Heroes: Origins (or something like that) will still on track for release. I recall that was supposed to air in April.

Dude, I love Heroes! Damn the writer’s strike for delaying it. Grrr. I read screenwriter John August’s blog quite often and he’s supposed to direct an episode of Origins if it ever happens. It doesn’t sound promising according to him :(

Thanks for the compliment Mike! I’m a metalhead from way back. You are so right about the musical mastery of many of the bands you mentioned. I am a fan of the band Fates Warning who is a big influence on Dream Theater. I saw them play a doubleheader in New Orleans several years ago. Out of all the progressive bands, Dream Theater is the most technically proficient (in my opinion). I’m not so much a fan of their singer though – I like the long instrumental sections on many of their songs. Very cool post my friend:)

@Tish: Thank ya, mam. And you’re welcome ;)
@Bobby: Hey buddy! I love Fates Warning as well. I’ve listened to them since I was like a freshman in high school…lol. Their Perfect Symmetry album was fantastic and will probably always be my favorite of theirs.
I tend to agree with you about James Labrie (DT’s singer). Although when I saw them live in Houston he really did a nice job. Often times though it sounds like he’s just missing the mark. There’s no denying the wizardry of the rest of the band though :P
