Free music on the internet? Imagine that.

The last couple weeks or so I’ve been listening to The Limitless Potential, a collection of remixes of the songs featured on Year Zero by Trent Reznor (aka Nine Inch Nails). What’s unique about this album is the fact that it’s FREE. By free I don’t mean because this is the internet where everything is free if you search hard enough. I mean it’s really free.
Of the 21 tracks on The Limitless Potential, most of them are pretty decent. There’s perhaps a couple I personally wouldn’t have included, but I’m sure someone must enjoy them. The whole thing is the result of an open source remix project/contest on 9inchnails.com. The first prize winning track “My Violent Heart (Prevention, Rejection)” by Dirty Scarab is indeed quite good but it’s definitely not my favorite of the bunch. My personal favorite would be the pawn project’s remix of “Me, I’m Not”. You can hear and download all of the tracks over on 9inchnails.com. If you’re a fan of Trent Reznor, it’s a nice addition to your collection.

i’ve been keeping track of that project too. i’m a big NiN fan so i wouldn’t want to give comments that would seem biased. i’m glad you enjoyed listening to it.

Cool :) I’ve listened to NIN since I was in high school eons ago. Pretty Hate Machine was so different than anything else I was listening to at the time. It took a few listens but eventually it really grew it on me. All these years later Trent is still making music that’s a little bit different ;P

i agree. it seemed that listening to NiN’s albums chronologically would give a listener an insight on his growth as an artist.

Hey Mike, the site and new banner kicks ass. I’m going to watch all the videos today. Should be a good cure for my annual major depressive episode. I was wondering if you could pass my way the name of what you use for a random friends link utility in your sidebar, the one I have isn’t working. And did you have to do any css tweaking to get checkbox to line up with the words on the subscribe to comments thingy at the end of your comment area? My box is a mile away from it’s corresponding text. LOL

I wouldn’t call myself one of the biggest fan of NIN in terms of whole discography but The Downward Spiral still sends me, years after I first listened to it in mid 90’s, to very contemplative state of mind… it’s still awesome music and one of the true conceptual albums. Not really much to separate it from master pieces like The Wall or Ziggy Stardust.

@Paula: That’s actually not a plugin that I use for the blogroll :) I’ll e-mail ya the code I use to do that. And nuh uh, I didn’t have to any tweaking on the subscribe to comments thingy. There must be something else defined in your CSS that’s causing it to line up strangely ;P
@Vik: I agree. The Downward Spiral is definitely my favorite of the bunch as well.

That’s a really cool concept. Maybe other artist’s will open things up for their fan’s to be more involved in their music. Thanks for sharing this.
