How to get rid of those old unused cell phones
I’m not a big fan of cell phones and generally can’t stand the ringers, bleeps and annoying bloops most of them make, however I’ve had my share of them and have several old ones hanging out in various places collecting large amounts of sneeze inducing dust. Up until now I didn’t really have a clue what the heck to do with them. I could use them as paper weights and doorstops I suppose or as I’ve learned recently, I can recycle them. You can too! Cool, eh? “Why should I recycle my cell phone?” Well I’ll tell you.
Some facts you might want to know
Since there’s now more than 200 million cell phone users in the United States alone who are replacing their phones at rate of just over a year and a half, that means there’s a whole lot of old unused phones laying around on this planet. Why is that such a bad thing? Imagine just a third of those 200 million people tossing their old phones into the garbage and flinging it all out by the curb for the garbage collectors to haul off. That presents a potentially hazardous situation. Cell phones contain toxins like lead, mercury and arsenic, just to name a few and when exposed to landfill conditions or worse, incinerated, those toxins can be released into the atmosphere. Now we’re breathing in all that junk. Not good. Sadly over 70% of Americans don’t even know they can recycle their old phones. Were you one of those that didn’t know you could recycle your cell phone, like me?
So how do I get rid of my old phones?

I have a few old phones laying around too. Maybe I’ll recycle them. Thanks for the info!
Hehe…I’d be willing to bet there’s a lot of people with old cell phones laying around which they never use anymore. It could at least buy a pizza or something! :P
Great post. I recall a group that was taking old but working condition cell phones and giving them to soldiers and soldiers families that did not have them in order to facilitate communication. Our environment is important and our responsibility. I have faved you on my technorati.
