When will they ever learn?

Just the other day a relative of mine asked me to help them out with their computer. It’s normally a fairly fast computer but it was taking forever to load anything. I attempted to simply load their web browser and it took a good forty seconds for it to load. That’s just not cool. Obviously something was wrong. After checking to see what processes were running on their computer it appeared to me that there were a number of things running in the background that shouldn’t be there. There had to be at least three or four different BHOs (browser helper objects). Why they call these a “helper object” is beyond me. They sure weren’t helping. Not only that when I would browse to any site there were popups all over the place. What a huge mess. It’s not the first time that this has happened mind you. This little ritual occurs every few weeks.

As usual I decided to enlist the help of Spy Sweeper. After doing a scan of the entire system it was revealed that there were indeed a number of baddies lurking about. Not only were there BHOs, but there were also dozens of various tracking cookies and a wonderful little trojan horse that would allow remote access to a PC. After scolding the relative on the importance of scanning a computer regularly for spyware and virii, I let Spy Sweeper do it’s thing and eradicate all the uglies. Within a matter of just a few short minutes the computer was sweeped (or scanned if you will) and all the threats were removed. I gave the PC a quick restart and sure enough things were once again back to normal and I was again a hero :D

It’s so important to check your PC on a regular basis for virii and spyware. If only I could get anyone in my family to understand that. It’s easier to just let Mike fix it ;)

My family is the exact same way, thankfully only a select few of them know how to operate a computer so I don’t have too much cleaning to do.

As for my own beast of a machine I do quick scans everyday, and a full scan coupled with some optimization tweaks once a week.

I’m just paranoid like that :P

P.S. post munkey’s registration is fixed though it’s still quiet over there at the moment until I can figure out the right way to kick things back into gear

Unfortunately a lot of my family members have taken to computers. They just haven’t quite learned how to use them properly yet :P

I shall go register for your forum :)

I’m in the same boat as you guys. We should start charging by the hour. Or at least get paid with food or something (#);D

The word “virii” has always made me laugh.
