Viral Tags – Do they work?

My buddy Marzie asked me to participate in this little exercise known as viral tagging. Perhaps you’ve already seen it making its rounds on the internet. I guess its purpose is to help you increase backlinks to your blog. The first thing I thought when I first heard about viral tagging is that you’d be receiving backlinks that aren’t necessarily within your niche. However since I pretty much blog about anything here as opposed to my comic site which has a pretty obvious niche, I decided to give it a try and see what happens. If you’d like to also give it a try, simply follow the instructions below.

UPDATE: I am no longer actively participating in viral tagging as it’s just become far too time consuming. This however does not mean I’ve removed any links to sites that linked back to me. I’ve moved all reciprocal links to my categorized link directory. If I continue to receive backlinks from others participating in viral tagging I will reciprocate and place their link in my directory :)

It’s in there somewhere…lol. The instructions just said to copy your URL over “one of the Viral Tags”, so I just copied it over the first blank one I found. It didn’t mention anything about the bottom but if I should be at the bottom I can put it there instead :P

I’ve gotten 6 or 7 new backlinks from it so far :) We’ll see how many more who are on the list actually update theirs to include my site.

That’s how I first started seeing it as well. Doing it this way you apparently get to attach keywords of your choice to the link. I’ve picked up at least 16 new backlinks so far :P

You might want to be careful with that, Bucky. I decided to stop doing it because I have a feeling Google may penalize bloggers for having large lists of links on one page like that…or in one post. I decided to instead break everything up on my links page into a link directory. There’s a great plugin that lets you create a link directory. Of course at the moment I can’t remember the name of it, but if you’re interested I’ll look up the name and URL for ya :)
The biggest burden to setting it up is of course entering all those links into the directory. i took me nearly an entire day to do it…lol.

It would probably take a week to organize all of these into directories….it’s an exhaustive list.
