Using two gamertags on one xbox360

This will likely be old news to some people.

xbox360console.pngA while back on a site I can’t remember, I read a short blurb that said it might be possible to login two different gamertags on one XBOX360 console, thus allowing you and a friend to play online together in ranked games. For example when you normally play Halo 3 with a friend on your console, they have to sign in as a guest. In ranked games guests are not allowed to participate. So how do two people play in a ranked game using the same 360 console? I shall tell you.

Start up your 360 (obviously) and after it automatically logs you into your live account, press X to log out. Now you should see an option to “recover a gamertag”. Hand the controller to your buddy and let him/her follow all the steps. They’ll be asked to input their gamertag and the e-mail and password that their gamertag is associated with. Once they’ve done this the gamertag will be downloaded to your machine. Voila! Now you’re all set.

Boot up Halo 3 (or whatever game you like to play online) and when you see the option for a second player to join the game, choose your gamertag. Your buddy’s gamertag will already be signed in. Now you both can play in ranked games together and all of your stats will be recorded to your individual gamertags.

When your buddy goes back home and attempts to play online on his XBOX360 he’ll see a message prompting him to recover his gamertag. He’ll have to go through the same steps he did on your machine. Once he does this, all the stats he racked up while playing on your machine will still be in tact. I can confirm that this all works because I did it last night while playing Halo 3 at my cousin’s house.

    Mike,
It’s easier if you just go out and by a memory unit for the Xbox 360 and save your gamertag on the memory unit. Then you can just take it to any Xbox 360 without having to go through the process to recover your tag on each box you move to (or leave your tag on a box where someone can play around on your gamertag).

Yeh, I assumed it probably would be, but up until yesterday I’d never even tried using two gamertags on one machine. Now that I know it works I probably will use the memory card.

For those who’d rather not purchase one though this is definitely a method that will work for them.

    mike,
I got as far as your article decribes and have the two accounts on one console.

    My question in:
I have two buddies who live together and they each have their own xbox live account and share an xbox 360 and want to play together in multiplayer on one TV.

Ive only tried on COD4 and theyre both logged in, I goto friend list and invite rommate, does roomate need to override my screen with his controller and goto messages and accept invite? Would this get them both entered on one mupliplayer game with splitscreen view?

seems complicated to get two people in one multiplayer game.

LOL…I think ya confused me a bit. Are you saying that you’re all playing on the same TV or on separate TVs?

If you’re all on the same machine you shouldn’t need to send invites at all, since you’d presumably be playing in the same party once everyone logs in to their account, and yes the multiplayer game should then be splitscreen.

    If I’m misunderstanding you, I apologize :)

That about answers it for me. One TV, One xabox, twoseperate live accounts.

I just couldnt figure out how to get the two of us on one ranked game. The other account was logged in but wouldnt show up in matchplay party list.

Ill mess around with it and figure it out. Thanks for the info about retriving the accounts.

I wish I could help ya little bit better, Brian, but so far I’ve only tried it with Halo 3. My cousin is supposed to be picking up COD 4 in the next couple days. I’ll see if I can figure it out for that as well :)

I have 2 xbox live gold accounts. For example abc123 and bcd123. I am trying to play medal of honor airborne with the 2 accounts logged in to the same xbox 360 console. Is there anyone who can tell me if this is possible? If so, what are the steps to get this to work appropriately? We have tried logging into both accounts and then starting the moh game, but it does not let us log into the same game at the same time.

Thanks for the tip, I tried it earlier today and it worked great! Think I’ll use this method with my friends but keep a memory unit handy if I don’t trust the machine owner enough to not mess around with my gamertag!

Glad to hear it worked out for you, James :) Unfortunately I don’t think it works with all games, but I think that has more to do with the games themselves. It seems some of them just don’t allow you the option to play with two gamertags on one system.

yup, me and my brother in law played gears of war together on same xbox split screen online. You have to sign in as guest to do it. Forget the exact steps.

Yes, you can. I have two on my xbox. I believe you can actually have up to four :)

I have 2 people on my friends list that told they’re playing on one console. Didn’t believe it till I read this. Seeing that it’s possible, here’s my question. Two people, same console, same game, would they be able to play two different modes in the game? (i.e. one’s playing the campaign and the other is playing death match on live)
