Gears of WarMy 20-something year old cousin stopped by last week and brought along his XBOX360. He popped in the game called Gears of War and together we wandered around blasting apart hordes of enemy creatures. Visually this game is stunning. There was many a head splattered in very realistic fashion. It’s amazing to see how much video game technology has progressed since the original XBOX. Despite how fantastic this game looked and how well it played I found myself getting bored of it roughly within 15 minutes. So we clicked off the 360 and decided to just order some Chinese, hang out and gab for a while.

When my cousin left to head back home to his wife, he left his XBOX behind for me to play around with for a couple weeks. Since ISplinter Cell: Double Agent was bored so quickly of the Gears of War game I decided to rent the latest Splinter Cell offering called Double Agent. I am a big fan of the earlier Splinter Cell games on the previous XBOX console, so logically I thought for sure I would enjoy this one. Sure enough after less than an hour of playing I was bored. Again just like Gears of War the graphics and game play were quite stunning, yet I lost interest. Either the XBOX360 lacks a certain something to pique interest for any sort of sustainable amount of time or I’m just getting old.

If you’re an older gamer, what has your experience been like with the latest gaming consoles? Do you still have that same love that you always had or do you find yourself losing interest? Perhaps it’s just a matter of finding the right game(s)?

Mike, lol, it really could just be that your getting older! LoL. I’m 34 (I think we’re close in age) and I’m noticing that I don’t like doing the same things anymore. I used to be completely addicted to the SIMS game, now I couldn’t be bothered. I also used to love to go out on weekends and dance, now I want to go to the movies and catch up on house work. Oh if only we could stay young forever! Not that older means boring, but things change….

Yeh, I’ll be 33 this year (YUCK). I still have plans to get a 360 though. I probably won’t use it that often, but there are some days when I get stressed out and wish I still had a working game console, so I could just stick in a game and blast a bunch of baddies ;P

You’re such a guy, lol! You know what I do when I’m stressed, bake cookies. I bake and you blow things up. Life is just strange.

    :)

Hehe…I need instant gratification. If I bake something I have to wait 15 minutes or longer for it to finish cooking :P

I think there’s an older factor about it, but certain games can get me hooked. I honestly think blogging is taking over my life right now and I barely even watch TV anymore. I think if I sat down with a game for a few days I could be hooked again, but I’d rather not.

Being productive is just part of being old. If I was a lazy ass with a winning lottery ticket in my back pocket, I’d probably be gaming all the time.

A winning lottery ticket would certainly be nice :)

I hear ya about blogging taking over your life…lol. It’s really consumed me lately.

I have the older XBOX and I have played with the 360, but I am totally sticking with the old one. I want to get a PS3 eventually, as I have heard about a game called Katamari that I want to play. Apparently in this game you get to roll up the world.

But honestly, there is still no match in my heart for my love for PC games - older ones like the Sierra games or a game called “Mean Streets”. I think the controller is cool and all, but I think I like typing.

For me too it seems that blogging has replaced video games, though I have tried playing again recently, but that did not pan out for me so well so I just returned to blogging.

I used to play the old Sierra games as well. Lame graphics compared to today’s standards but the games were so much fun :D

I think it’s just the games. You just need to hunt around a bit more, there has been a bit of reconnaissance in creativity lately, but I think those games are still a bit … “predictable” in experience. You should ask Pete over at PeteCullen.net for some good recommendations.

I’m sure it’s partly the games. Maybe if I were into all of those first person shooter style games that seem to be all the rage nowadays. I can’t stand them though. I get dizzy when I play them :(

I hardly use the console. My kids are the ones using it. Besides, I’m usually lurking around other blogs trying really hard not to get noticed hehe.

I’m a 34 yr. old gamer and I don’t have any of the new consoles yet. I did borrow a 360 for a weekend a little while ago and liked it, just can’t really afford to buy one right now. Burnout Revenge is what I played most, even though I’ve played it to death on the original xbox already, it was fun to play online against other people. Second in line was geometry wars, that was fun. The main thing keeping me out of the new consoles is the price tags. For now I’d rather just throw $15 a month at Sony or Blizzard to play an MMORPG.

I hear ya about those price tags. The xbox360 is going on two years old now, isn’t it? It’s still $400.

I’ve been thinking I should try out online gaming and see what that’s like. I’ve never really ventured into that area of gaming. I can imagine that’s probably worlds better than just playing against the computer all the time :)

Oooh yeah, much better. For a beginner I recommend either World of Warcraft or EverQuest 2. Both can be picked up fairly cheap, WoW is like $25. EQ2: Echoes of Faydwer box set contains the main game and all 3 expansions for around $40. Then it’s just $15 a month to fuel the addiction.

I’ve known a lot of people over the last few years that are really into World of Warcraft. I’ve never really sat down and actually checked it out though. Perhaps I will :) What are the system requirements for games like that? I haven’t updated to a new PC in the last couple years so I’m still using an Athlon 2700 processor with a so so graphics card. The card does have 256 meg of RAM though.

I’m also a big sports game fan. I’d love to be able to play in fantasy football style leagues online, as it gets really boring pummeling the computer over and over again..lol. I think I once read about about stuff like that on xbox live. Once I do end up getting 360 I may look into that.

I know I definitely DON’T want to play those games like HALO and such online. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only person on the planet that has no interest in them :P
